Light Leaf Spot

Light Leaf Spot Cycle

Symptoms

These first appear from late November as large mealy blotches on the leaves with a pinkish white centre and white spore droplets around the edge of the lesion.

The symptoms can be confused with scorch or frost damage so incubation of leaves for 1-2 days in a polythene bag at room temperature will produce the defining spore droplets.

By the spring heavily infected plants may be stunted and will produce weak growth at stem extension. Secondary spread can occur throughout the life of the crop producing lesions on stems, leaves and pods.

Light Leaf spot is most damaging in Scotland and northern England.

Control

Similar to those for Phoma; where it occurs regularly a fungicide spray in late November/early December should be applied and repeated at early stem extension. In southern, eastern and central England, fungicides used to control Phoma are likely to control Light Leaf Spot.
