Research into Lodging
- Since 2012, ADAS has conducted valuable studies to measure the implications of lodged crops on lost yield and lost revenue.
- The studies suggest that the cost of lodging shouldn’t be ignored and can be significant.

ADAS aerial lodging surveys
- ADAS carried out Aerial surveys of oilseed rape crop in 2012 and again in 2014 to identify how much lodging is present in commercial fields.
- Lodging was found to be present in almost all fields.
- A significant area of oilseed rape was found to be lodged: 35% in 2012 and 27% in 2014.
- Lodging usually happens in the middle of the field so can easily be missed and only identified at harvest.
- The survey highlights the need for farmers to be aware of the potential for lodging and to take action to prevent it.
ADAS lodging study – lodging at different angles
- In 2014, ADAS completed an artificial lodging experiment to quantify the cost of lodging.
- The crop was gradually lodged by hand to different angles – from leaning to lodging flat, and at different stages of growth.
- The study showed that late leaning – which is often seen as beneficial, can actually have dramatic effects on yield.
- Seeds/m2 was most affected. Early lodging affects determination of seed number and late lodging causes pod abortion.
