Crystal® - Label Change
Crystal® – (MAPP # 13914), change in latest application
CRD has authorised a change for the latest time of application for Crystal® (MAPP13914). Previously the cut off timing for use of Crystal® stated, “Before 3rd tiller stage (GS23) and before 31st December”. This has now changed to “Before 3rd tiller stage (GS23)”.
This means that Crystal® can still be used on winter cereals beyond the end of December, provided they haven’t gone beyond GS23. This has been authorised by the CRD at an ideal time, given the weather conditions in the autumn and the subsequent late drilling.
As a reminder a winter sown crop is one that is drilled before the 1st February 2020.
It is important to note that the label statement ‘Do not apply Crystal® pre-emergence to crops drilled after 30th November’ is still in effect into the new year.
This is a precautionary statement as crop thinning can occur if newly sown and sprayed crops sit in waterlogged conditions for a long period. Slow growing roots and shoots in cold, wet soils sprayed with pre-em herbicides have greater potential to suffer crop effects. Also later drilled crops may not be sown into the best seedbeds in terms of seed depth, seed coverage and soil clods. These poor conditions are not conducive for crop safety with soil residual chemistry.
Application Timing Advice
At peri-emergence the crop is very tender and susceptible to damage and stress. In general, consider the crop and how you would treat it as the same as at pre-emergence. Seed depth and seedbed conditions are important factors.
Top Tips when spraying peri-em
1) Check seedbed quality and seed depth and apply same rational as pre-em.
2) Ensure no waterlogging evident across the field or do not spray these areas.
3) Product choice, in winter wheat Crystal® + DFF still recommended, however in winter barley apply Crystal® alone.
4) Weather conditions, some rainfall after application is OK, but heavy rainfall could lead to crop damage. Check for frost risk that can lead to damage on tender plants.
5) Do not compromise black-grass control. If crop has not had a pre-em, then consider a peri-em with Crystal®.
Labels of Crystal® on farm will not be up to date so we advise growers to obtain an up to date copy of the Crystal® authorisation from the north_east CRD website.
