Revystar® XE is the proven solution at T2 in 2021

Key Points

  • Missed / reduced T0s and T1s will have left wheat crops exposed as Septoria moves out of the latent phase, even on stronger varieties
  • 2020 highlighted that product longevity is vital, even with seemingly little visual (or latent) disease at the time of T2 application. Infection will be present, particularly on untreated leaf 2
  • Well-timed T2 applications are essential to cover the flag leaf, regardless of T1 timing
  • CTL is now absent from fungicide programs - weaker chemistry is highly exposed
  • Revystar® - T2 is not the time to introduce risk XE is proven in unsettled weather
  • Early crop stress and leaf wetness is highly conducive to ramularia development

T2 Wheat Recommendations

  • There is often a trade-off between curativity and longevity, as the quickest acting (most curative) active ingredients often lack longevity
  • Revystar®
    • Fast uptake leads to outstanding curative power
    • Inner-leaf reservoirs deliver long lasting efficacy
XE sets the benchmark for curative septoria control, and is proven to protect against variable weather for 6-8 weeks after application

1.0 l/ha Revystar® XE

  • Our original recommendation has not changed – Revystar® XE is proven to give robust levels of curative and long-lived protection across all varieties and situations
  • 1 l/ha is the economic efficient dose
  • Weather independence gives confidence during periods of unsettled rainfall
  • An increased dose provides further reassurance of kick-back and longevity of protection in very high-pressure situations
  • Proven rainfast within 15 minutes in rigorous ADAS field trials

+ F500®

  • Support to rust control within any programme
  • Proven AgCelence® benefits, including stress tolerance and GLA retention

Weather confidence

Rainfall can negatively impact fungicide performance. Rigorous independent testing by ADAS assessed this in-field, by simulating rainfall 15 minutes after fungicide application. The quick inner-leaf uptake of Revystar®the highest level of XE protects from external environmental conditions, giving Septoria protection even during periods of unsettled weather.

Know when to expect visual disease

Over 1400 untreated Septoria assessments in BASF trials highlight that, following a T1 application, we should not expect visual Septoria on leaf 2 or the flag leaf at GS37-39. This does not mean that the upper leaves are clean, in particular untreated leaf 2 which has been exposed for a number of weeks. Direct leaf to leaf contact and frequent rain splash events continue transmission up to yield-critical leaves.

  • More resistant varieties have a longer latent period, giving increased timing flexibility.
  • The rate of Septoria progression (steepness of each line) is largely a factor of temperature and rainfall. Fungicide use also significantly impacts this.
  • Recent rainfall in 2021 will stimulate Septoria development, but this is only likely to show on the top two leaves after T2 applications are made.

1. A combination of high curative activity and longevity of protection is required at T2.

2. 2020 highlighted that protection against variable weather for 6-8 weeks after application is normal.

3. Revystar®new benchmark for fungicide performance XE provides a - particularly in the absence of CTL.

Do not compromise on GS39 T2 timing

  • We are in a compressed season – the gap between T1 and T2 may be shorter than usual as day length and temperature drive the development of varieties in different ways.
  • If the strength of T1 application was reduced due to a lower perceived Septoria threat, either through product selection or decreased dose, this has implications for T2 requirements particularly if an unavoidable delay in application occurs.
  • GS39 remains the strongest timing for T2 applications, but Revystar®strongest level of curative flexibility XE continues to provide the (and yield) if required.

Barley Recommendations

Drought and repeated frosts created stress within barley crops. There is a strong scientific link between early crop stress and ramularia risk. Compounding this is leaf wetness, known to be conducive to ramularia development. T2 maintains the potential of winter barley. In the absence of chlorothanil, Revysol®is the key active ingredient for ramularia control.

0.75 l/ha Revystar® XE

  • A combination of the best barley SDHI Xemium®, and Revysol®, the new benchmark for ramularia control.
  • Excellent control of Rhynchosporium and brown rust.
  • Adding folpet will further enhance ramularia control when the risk is very high.
    • Malting crops – Apply by GS45. Do not exceed 62.5 g/ha Xemium®.
    • Feed crops – Apply by GS69.

AHDB Fungicide Performance Conference 2020

Part of Agronomy Week 2020.
Knowledge of the potential power of an active ingredient (or product) is essential in disease management. First and foremost, it will help you gauge the potential return on your spray investments. Critically, it can be used to develop effective fungicide programmes that balance the need to control disease with the need to protect chemistry from fungicide resistance.
