Caryx® in the autumn

Early drilled crops have got away well and are likely to reach 4-6 leaves by mid October or well before then!

Those sown at low seed rates will have space around them but any populations of 35-40 plants/sqm or more will grow tall quickly, with weak lower stems, making them more vulnerable to csfb larvae feeding damage (ADAS research) and prone to lodging in the spring.

For crops reaching 4-6 leaves in September or by mid-October, Caryx® is recommended. This should be followed with canopy management in the spring as appropriate.

Caryx® recommendation

  • Timing: 4-6 leaves of the crop in September or October. <#text>Plants larger than 4-6 leaves will be too big to benefit properly. Also, growth starts to slow down by late October and PGR activity will be much less.DON’T DELAY.
  • Rate: 0.7l/ha on 4-6 leaf crop. If high plant population or fertile soil, 1.0l/ha may be required.

Why use Caryx®?

Autumn Caryx® reduces lodging risk and makes the crop more resilient.

Autumn Caryx® EffectBenefits
Short thickened stem base· Reduced lodging risk
· More tolerant to csfb larvae feeding damage
· Growing point protected from frosts, pigeons
Large root collar diameter· Resists damage from cold, wet soils
· Provides reserves for early spring vigour
Increase in rooting - both in autumn
& persists through spring (ADAS field trials)
· Improved anchorage - reduced lodging risk
· More able to cope with winter waterlogging
· Better nutrient and water uptake in spring
Visual greening effect - increase in chloroplasts· Increase in photosynthesis to support root growth

Disease control – spray thresholds

  • Phoma – May not be present when Caryx®Phoma control is applied and since big plants are more tolerant of , the 30% dose of metconazole in 0.7l/ha will give some protectant activity. If 10% of plants are infected, consider adding a 20% dose of difenoconazole or prothioconazole.
  • Light leaf spot control – The main infection period for light leaf spot is from November onwards. Since this is later than the Caryx® timing, a separate spray will be required.

The very early drilled crops?

Where crops are at 4-6 leaves in early September, apply Caryx® now. If the crop starts growing away strongly again in October, you can apply Sunorg Pro® 0.4-0.5 l/ha. Caryx® can only be applied once in the autumn followed by once in the spring.

The Caryx® Effect

OSR treated with Caryx® in the spring works in three ways to help minimise risks and maximise OSR yields – we call this ‘The Caryx Effect’: all three Caryx® effects will be needed in spring 2020: a triple lock-in for yield
