Why Canopy® is an important PGR this season

Key Messages – Do you know what the rest of the season will bring?

  • Last chance to build root benefits and anchorage strength.
    • Better nutrient uptake with a better root system.
    • Anchorage strength is the main way to combat root lodging, which is the most common type of lodging in the UK.
    • Increase root plate spread, shorten and thicken lower internodes.
  • A programmed approach to PGRs is the most consistent way to create both optimal crop canopy structure and ear/tiller numbers for yield.
  • Canopy® combines quick uptake and prolonged duration of activity that works well in cool, cloudy conditions.

Have you applied a PGR at T0?

Once again there is a huge variety of cropping situations present in winter sown cereals this season.

Forward crops are looking very healthy and it is important anchorage strength is built so high yielding potential is not lost to lodging later in the season.

Improved nutrient uptake through increased root growth can lead to yield benefits regardless of lodging. In BASF Real Result Farm trials in 2020, the application of Canopy® gave a yield increase over and above fungicide input across a wide range of varieties, regardless of their lodging score.

Where disease pressure is low, or crops are backward, T0’s may not have been applied and therefore PGR may not have been applied to the crop either. T1 is now the last chance to build anchorage strength and gain the benefits of better rooting and nutrient uptake. Nobody can predict what the weather holds in store for later in the season, and you cannot wind the clock back at T2 and expect a PGR to give you lower stem strength and anchorage effects.

Canopy® has two key active ingredients (prohexadione-calcium and mepiquat chloride) which complement each other to provide quick uptake into the plant to give immediate activity and then a prolonged duration of activity part to provide long lasting effect.

Canopy® will:

  • Be immediately available within the plant to provide instant PGR effects
  • Give timing flexibility with activity at lower temperatures (active from 5oC)
  • Be active independent from sunlight requirements
  • Give long lasting activity

Product Recommendation at T1 for winter wheat, winter barley and winter rye.

Drill TimingHad a PGR at T0Not had a PGR at T0
Early drilled, good crop growth, forward crop, potentially thick canopy.Stem strength an issue, sequence best approach to maximise rooting and strengthen lower internodes.

Canopy® 0.4 l/ha +/- CCC
Need to maximise PGR to strengthen lower internodes to help resist root lodging later in the season.

Canopy® 0.6-0.8 l/ha +/- CCC
Late drilled, backward crop, sitting in water over winter.Sequence approach to build on maintaining viable tillers and strengthening lower internodes.

Canopy® 0.4 l/ha +/- CCC
Need to maintain all the viable tillers available and give some assistance to root plate growth and lower stem strength to maximise crop potential.

Canopy® 0.5-0.75 l/ha +/- CCC
