A Journey Through Oxford Farming Conference: Past, Present, and Future

For many years, BASF has been proud to partner with the Oxford Farming Conference (OFC), an event that continues to challenge, include, and inspire the agricultural community. As OFC approaches its 90th anniversary, we’re taking a moment to reflect on some memorable milestones and look ahead to what’s next.

Embracing Change

Back in 2018, the conference theme was “Embracing Change”. Mike Green, then BASF’s Environmental Stewardship Manager, joined the iconic Birds and Bees Debate in the majestic Sheldonian Theatre, an OFC first.

Alongside Tony Juniper CBE, Julia Aglionby, and Paul Temple, Mike explored the future of greening and biodiversity, blending policy insights with practical on-farm perspectives. It was a session that not only looked forward, but showcased our commitment to sustainability conversations happening at farm level.

Farming a New Future

Fast forward to 2023, when Farming, The Biggest Job on Earth took centre stage at OFC under the theme “Farming a New Future”. BASF hosted a special breakfast session, bringing together farmers from the UK and overseas to share the realities of producing high-quality food while caring for the environment. The energy in the room was electric, attendees left inspired and eager to share their own stories, amplifying advocacy for UK agriculture.

The Power of Diversity

OFC24 marked another first: BASF hosted a session in the Oxford University Museum of Natural History.

Under the theme “The Power of Diversity”, the discussion focused on building resilience in a changing climate. Our panel featured global voices and innovative thinkers, including, Mary Boote, CEO, Global Farmer Network, William Pitts, second-generation farmer and founder of Project Fortress, Hannah Darby, fourth-generation farmer near Huntingdon, Martin Andersson, eighth-generation farmer in Sweden. Together, they shared novel interventions and global perspectives on agriculture.

A masterclass in media

Another standout moment from 2024 was a media training workshop led by BBC broadcaster Anna Hill, who put BASF’s Joel Johnson through his paces. From mastering interviews to handling tough questions, it was a practical and fun session that left participants feeling confident and prepared.

Investing in Future Leaders

Leadership development is at the heart of OFC’s charitable remit: Include. Challenge. Inspire. More than 130 individuals have participated in the OFC Inspire Programme (formerly Emerging Leaders), which BASF has proudly supported for eight years. From embassy visits and media training to on-farm events and networking opportunities, the programme equips future leaders with skills and confidence.

In 2024, alumni gathered at The Grange to learn more about Project Fortress, reconnect, and enjoy great food. The highlight? A workshop on soil health with our Sustainability Manager, Alice Johnston, which sparked lively discussion and plenty of questions.

A Royal Encounter at OFC

One of the standout moments from last year’s Oxford Farming Conference was when BASF’s Joel Johnson had the privilege of meeting HRH The Princess Royal. Known for her deep commitment to rural communities and sustainable farming, Princess Anne engaged in a thoughtful conversation with Joel about the challenges and opportunities facing UK agriculture. It was a memorable exchange that underscored the importance of collaboration across all levels of the industry.

A Partnership Built to Last

Our involvement spans decades: attending sessions, speaking on stage, hosting partner fringes, and backing leadership initiatives, and as OFC celebrates 90 years in January 2026, BASF is proud to continue championing conversations that matter, on sustainability, innovation, and leadership.

Together, we’ll keep shaping the future of farming, because it truly is The Biggest Job on Earth.
