If grass weeds could be there, there is a battle to be won

Wherever black-grass and Italian ryegrass pose a threat, there is a need for action. No matter the weed count in that field, the threat to yields, profits and long-term planning must be challenged effectively.

The escalation of a small number of plants into an infestation can be devastating for a farm business and can result in drastic action. Wherever there is evidence of black-grass or Italian ryegrass, maintain control by using the best available chemistry as part of a comprehensive IPM game plan.

Common Ground: Maintaining weed control momentum

Having mostly achieved a good level of weed control last season, experts are urging growers to avoid complacency and keep their foot on the gas as pre-emergence applications near. CPM opens up the discussion for this month’s Common Ground.

Advice on managing grassweeds after low pressure season

Successful weed control was a highlight of last year’s growing season, with some of the lowest blackgrass pressures recorded in the UK over the past decade.
However, experts are warning growers to remain vigilant, as successful control in a single season does not directly translate to reduced weed pressure in the following crop.

Hold the line on grass weeds this autumn

After a season of good grass weed control, experts are urging growers to keep the pressure on this autumn.
Fields that have seen moderate to high black-grass pressure may look cleaner after near ideal conditions in autumn 2024 led to effective control, but the seedbank will still harbour countless seeds.

Common Ground: Taking a zero tolerance approach to grass weeds

With autumn 2023 still fresh in minds and harvest likely to fall earlier this year, delaying drilling may prove hard for many, placing additional pressure on herbicide programmes and weed control approaches. CPM hosted August’s Common Ground discussion to explore furth.

Relentless approach reduces black-grass returns

Farmers Weekly, Aug 2024
The mild, wet winter of the 2023/24 season provided ideal conditions for black-grass growth and subsequent high levels of grass weed seed return. However, Somerset grower Mark Doble has shown that with strategic IPM use and a long-term perspective, it is possible to regain control in high pressure fields.

Getting back on top of black-grass

The Farming Forum, Aug 2024
With last autumn’s record-breaking wet weather putting many drilling and herbicide programmes into chaos, many fields are facing high black-grass seed return. It is extremely frustrating, but growers are advised to stick with tried and tested best-practice – use cultural controls and delay drilling, apply the most effective chemistry and apply it within 48 hours of sowing.

Grass weeds require strategies not tactics

Farmers Weekly, Jul 2024
A comprehensive Integrated Pest Management (IPM) strategy is essential to combat the pressure from grass weeds such as bromes, ryegrass, and black-grass. Here, farmers and industry stakeholders discuss the best strategies to control these three grass weeds.

Grass weed control: A challenging year

CPM, Jul 2023
There’s no disguising the fact that grass weed control isn’t as good as it should be in some fields this summer. CPM attends a BASF briefing to hear why it’s been a difficult season and the lessons that can be drawn from it.
