Canopy® is a plant growth regulator for use on most cereal crops except spring wheat and durum wheat. Canopy® is a co-formulation of prohexadione-calcium and mepiquat chloride, providing a range of benefits including application and rate flexibility, and improved lodging resistance, which protects yield and quality.
Canopy® delivers a particularly positive effect on stem cell wall structure by encouraging an increase in stem dry matter and lignin content, giving plants a higher tensile strength. The product works by enhancing effects on the root tips through increased production of cytokinin (plant hormone), which increases root biomass, resulting in the improved ability of the plant to take up more water and nutrients. Leaves on cereal plants treated with Canopy® tend to have higher concentrations of chlorophyll, which contributes to increased levels of photosynthesis.
Canopy® has a lodging resistance. Roots are not only stronger and longer, they also have a higher proportion of fine roots improving the crop's ability to extract water and nutrients.
Canopy® enhances survival of side tillers, increasing viable ears at harvest and gives your crops the security for yield and quality in any weather.
When Canopy® is applied to cereal crops, it begins to work straight away and so it is not dependent on the plant’s metabolism for activation as is the case for some other PGR’s. This rapid onset of activity is a valuable benefit as Canopy® can offer more consistent performance under conditions where plant metabolism is reduced due to lower temperatures.

The cost of lodging
On average 20% of the wheat area is lost every three or four years as the result of lodging. Economic loss is greatest when crops lodge early with up to 75% of yield lost if crops lodge at ear emergence. Later lodging has less effect on yield, but will impair quality characteristics such as Hagberg falling number. Lodged crops often require extra drying which can cost £3–£7.50/tonne.
