Highgate

Fungicides

Highgate® is a protectant and systemic fungicide for use in oilseed rape for the control of Sclerotinia stem rot

Benefits

  • When used preventively as the first spray in a Sclerotinia programme, Highgate provides direct protection to the stem and leaves
  • Independently* endorsed growth management effects - *ADAS/ HGCA trials 2010–2012
  • Highgate provides beneficial effects on canopy structure and pod balance
  • Optimised formulation with benefits over tank mix – enhancing uptake and disease control

Why Highgate®?

Highgate® is a preventive fungicide for Sclerotinia stem rot in oilseed rape. It is best used at yellow bud, when there will be optimal penetration of the canopy and beneficial growth control effects. A second spray may be applied two to three weeks later for further protection against Sclerotinia, particularly where moist petals fall and stick to the stem. The protection of the mid and lower canopy is important as yield loss is greatest from lower main stem lesions. When the spray is applied at the flowering stage, this can lead to poor penetration. Also, weathered leaves lower down the canopy are more prone to infection (lower leaf wax).

Core benefits of using Highgate® beyond disease prevention include lodging control, canopy management and rooting. In independent trials, Highgate® achieved a 28% reduction in lodged area and a yield saving of 0.2-0.4 t/ha, with easier harvesting. When the green area index (GAI) was over 0.8 just prior to stem extension, Highgate® also resulted in increased canopy size and number of seeds per square metre, with an additional 0.21 t/ha yield. When dry (typically every 2-3 years) there was a 25% increase in rooting at depth and a 0.3 t/ha yield increase. (173 comparisons reviewed in Journal of Agricultural Science 2009 147, 273-285, J Spink, P Berry).

Highgate® increases yield

Highgate® delivers significant yield increases even where minimal disease is present. In 2010-2012 Sclerotinia trials, 4 out of 6 trials had low disease (4% incidence); there was no lodging in the trials; high untreated yield is indicative of good crops. Highgate added an additional 0.45 tonnes per hectare (equating to £122 per hectare).

Filan® and Highgate® were able to add more to seed-fill stage i.e. reduce ethylene production and relieve moisture stress (eastern bias – essex, kent, herefordshire), Highgate - pod balance effects increase lower canopy yield.

Light leaf spot control

Highgate® at yellow bud protects upper stems and pod canopy. For the treatment of light leaf spot, the key timing in spring is before the start of stem extension in January/February. This should have followed a late autumn spray.

HGCA trials using autumn and spring timings showed equivalent Light Leaf Spot control with Highgate® compared to standards (Note Highgate® is not approved for autumn use but this shows its good inherent activity). So, Highgate® provides good protection of the upper canopy when sprayed at yellow bud or flowering.
