Why Honesty®?
Honesty® is a new liquid tuber treatment approved for use on all potato crops. It contains Xemium®, an SDHI, offering strong broad spectrum disease control.
Honesty® is applied at a rate of 0.2l/t, with 0.05l/t of application enhancer, available as an Honesty® Potato Pack. To treat 20 tonnes of potatoes, simply mix the 4 litres of Honesty® with 1 litre of application enhancer, within the 5-litre container. The application rate of the Honesty® Potato Pack is 0.25l/t. Honesty® should be applied using a single or dual rotating nozzle application on a roller table.
Paul Goddard, BASF Business Development Manager for Specialities, believes Honesty® is a real game changer for the industry.
“We are really excited about Honesty® as it delivers the best reduction of rhizoctonia, silver scurf, black dot, and has promising activity against dry rot, gangrene and more. Honesty® is easy to apply, with application to the tuber not being tied to planting date, alongside having excellent tuber coverage and drying.”)
Honesty® Stewardship Scheme
BASF is committed to helping our customers achieve the highest possible tuber yields and quality. BASF have devised the Scheme to provide additional protection for distribution, agronomists and growers in ensuring optimal use of the Honesty® product.
Qualified and safe operators
As a minimum all operators must be qualified in the use PPPs and the application equipment, such as:
a. Principles of Safe Handling and Application of Pesticides (PA1)
b. Safe Application of Pesticides to Plant Material During a Continuous Flow Process (PA12)
Appropriate application equipment
a. To optimise treatment, the application equipment must be fit for purpose. Any compromise here resulting in an inferior application will have the potential to compromise efficacy and cause crop issues
b. Applications must be applied using a shrouded, rotating nozzle applicator over a roller table, with the roller table set to maintain a continuous and even flow of rotating tubers
High quality seed stock
a. Tuber treatments make a good seed stock better, they will not save a distressed seed stock
b. Whatever tuber treatment is to be applied, seed must be checked for disease, damage, soil adherence to confirm the seed is of good quality. Of particular concern are rots as these can easily be spread with each movement of the tubers and they will have a negative impact on emergence
Plant Protection Product recommendation
a. All tuber treatments can only be applied following the recommendation from a BASIS qualified advisor and follows the checks to ensure a high quality seed stock is being used
b. This recommendation must be recorded as for all PPP applications
Application timing
a. Application to dormant tubers is preferred (a dormant tuber is when the first chits are less than 0.5mm)
b. Non dormant tubers can be treated but consideration must be given to the chit length and potential for damage. Chits that can be caught when brushing your thumb over them will have potential to be physically damaged by the treatment process
c. The removal or damage to chits will impact the emergence of the crop, creating a delayed and uneven stand
Properly calibrated equipment
a. Applicator calibration is a measure for correct application. To ensure tuber treatments are being applied as intended regular calibration checks are advised
b. Equipment must be calibrated shortly before the start of the application season
c. Follow up calibrations help to avoid application issues by spotting a problem early and should aim to be done at least weekly, more often should there be a change in the applicator setup
d. Record each calibration
Post treatment care
a. All treated seed must be stored in labelled containers
b. Containers used for all but temporary storage must allow the seed to breathe without sweating, such as wooden boxes. Polypropylene bags can cause sweating and are only appropriate for temporary storage
c. Treated tubers must be dried quickly, such as placing against a drying wall with air blown through boxed seed
d. Once dry, store treated seed in the same way as for untreated seed
Documentation
a. Records promote consistency in your processes and sets a standard giving clear goals to be achieved and the steps that have been taken to achieve those goals
b. To help growers maximise the efficiency of fungicide treatments and assist with record keeping, we have set out the north_east Honesty® Potato Pack Stewardship Form as a record of good practice regarding the application of the Honesty® Potato Pack.
BASF strongly advise that the following stewardship guidance is followed to ensure safe and effective use of Honesty. BASF will not accept any liability for any crop issues and/or crop failure where the agronomist or grower has failed to comply with the Scheme process and conditions.
Scheme process and conditions:
1. The agronomist or grower must follow the guidance set out in the north_east SAC Potato Storage Diseases Management Guide and the BASF Honesty Stewardship Guidance found on this page.
2. The agronomist or grower will complete one north_east Honesty® Potato Pack Stewardship Form per seed lot treated on farm.
