Cereal Disease ID App

In conjunction with HGCA, and Bill Clark, BASF produced the Encyclopaedia of Cereal Diseases in 2009 and due to the uptake of apps and the need to provide valuable information on the move, BASF have made this available on a number of mobile platforms.

Key Features of the Cereals Disease App are:

  • Based on the popular HGCA & BASF Encyclopaedia of Cereal Diseases
  • Quick and easy mobile access to information on 36 key cereal diseases to aid identification
  • Search by pathogen, common name or free text search
  • Includes symptoms, life cycle, host, importance and photographs
  • Email information to email address of choice

The Encyclopaedia

The need to deliver consistent, high yields of high quality grain makes control of cereal diseases an important component of successful crop management. Recognition of the disease, and an understanding of the pathogen(s) responsible, is the first step in successful disease control. The Encyclopaedia was produced to help the grower, adviser and others involved in cereal production recognise diseases and learn something about them.

Symptoms of both common and less frequently found diseases are illustrated and described, together with an outline of the disease cycle of the pathogen and an indication of the importance of the disease. The Encyclopaedia or app is not intended to be a guide to disease control. Such information is readily available elsewhere, for example the principles of wheat disease management can be found in the HGCA Wheat Disease Management Guide and current information on fungicide performance is published annually on the HGCA website.

The app is based on the Encyclopaedia of Cereal Diseases for which HGCA and BASF plc, Crop Protection provided funding. While the authors have worked on the best information available to them, neither the HGCA nor BASF plc shall in any event be liable for any loss, damage or injury howsoever suffered directly or indirectly in relation to the Encyclopaedia or the app or the research on which it is based.
