Filan®
Filan® is a protectant and systemic fungicide for use against early and late-season diseases in oilseed rape.
Filan® is as reliable as ever, as seen in this high disease Herefordshire AHDB fungicide performance trial in 2017, where fungicide persistence was really put to the test.
Filan® is also a responsible choice for a flowering spray, it’s a non-azole in an azole dominant fungicide programme.
Triazole resistant strains to Light Leaf Spot (LLS) exist which have the same CYP51 mutation found in Septoria in winter wheat. FRAG guidelinesstate we should:
“Consider using different modes of action to DMIs when targeting other diseases such as sclerotinia at mid-flowering.”
LLS is polycyclic in the crop and LLS spores are still present in the crop at flowering even where the disease is at low levels.
If LLS is still a worry, Filan® will provide good protectant activity against LLS moving onto the pod canopy. Remember no flowering spray will control LLS already present lower down the canopy given it won’t reach it, it just protects the pod canopy.
Filan® also makes the crop more resilient, by increasing green leaf area duration (GLAD) to maximize seed-fill. Increasing GLAD helps counteract factors which can cause premature loss of green leaf such as water stress, stem cankers and verticillium. In ADAS research (4 trials) the increase in GLAD added 0.2t/ha in the absence of disease. The increase in GLAD has also been found with Pictor® which is not surprising – both fungicides contain boscalid, which reduces the stress hormone ethylene.

*Advisory label statement to protect against development of Sclerotinia resistance in the UK. Tank mix partners include thiophanate-methyl, azoxystrobin, metconazole, tebuconazole and prothioconazole, although for resistance management it is advisable to avoid azoles for mid-flower spray. Note: triazoles should not be used if a pyrethroid is also being included.
