What lurks beneath?
A high dormancy year for black-grass is being talked about this autumn, but that is only true for the seed that has shed from last season and is sitting on the soil surface. However, the real danger lurks beneath. Given the high populations we’ve seen this year, we have to ask ourselves, what happens when the crop is drilled? What lies beneath within the seedbank? And to what extent will it germinate? The answer is, nobody knows.
It is also clear that more people this year are prepared to delay drilling in order to maximise control. While in the last two years, conditions have been open, giving enough time to prepare stale seed beds and apply subsequent residual herbicide programmes, who can guarantee the weather this year? It’s important that growers are not discouraged from delaying drilling, and so ensuring the most effective herbicide programme is used before the weather closes in is critically important.
