Autumn annual meadow grass and BLW control

Early control of AMG and BLW’s are vital to optimise crop yield. These weeds compete strongly with newly emerging crops for moisture, nutrients and light. Left uncontrolled they can significantly reduce yield.

Crystal® and Picona® applied pre-emergent provides a good start to weed control as they combine active ingredients with reliable AMG performance and BLW control with residual activity. This is critical for AMG as it germinates throughout the growing season, completing its lifecycle, including seed set, in only 6 weeks.

As part of a resistance management strategy, do not rely solely on post-emergent applications of contact acting ALS herbicides for BLW control as incidences of resistance to this mode of action have been increasing, so efficacy cannot be guaranteed. Additionally, ALS inhibitors with activity against AMG, such as Othello are not registered for use on winter barley.

Notes:

  • These mixes can be applied pre, peri or post-em in winter wheat but when spraying post-em in barley, wait until the crop has 2-3 leaves before application
  • * Do not use mixes with Defy® peri-emergence in winter barley
  • Max 2,000 g/ha total pendimethalin dose in season and 1,320 g/ha max individual dose
  • Some transient yellowing of the crop may follow use of Picona® or Crystal® + DFF, especially after peri/post-emergence applications. Effects are transient and have no impact on yield
  • Crystal® can be applied pre-em until the end of November. After which, apply at one leaf of the crop, to minimise risk of crop damage by heavy rainfall.
For best results spray within 48 hours of drilling ideally to moist, clod-free and consolidated seedbeds. Ensure seed is covered by 32mm of settled soil. Treat shallow drilled crops post-em.
