Early spring weed tidy-up in winter cereals
Key messages:
- Apply remaining grassweed treatments early to finish the program and gain optimum control.
- Partner Picona® or Stomp® Aqua with early applications of graminicides such as Atlantis, Hamlet, Monolith, Broadway Star, etc to gain: improved efficacy, wider broad-leaved weed control, top up on residual activity
Even with good cultural controls and pre-emergence herbicides in place, it is essential to keep the pressure on black-grass coming out of the winter to maximise control and increase yield potential. Any remaining post-emergence herbicides should be applied as soon as conditions are suitable with the most effective residual partners.
For best results:
- Ideally apply in tank mixtures with graminicides before the end of February as soon as weeds begin to actively grow.
- Do not apply graminicides to stressed or ‘soft’ crops.
- Consider resistance status of the grassweeds when selecting appropriate actives/product.
Picona® (pendimethalin + picolinafen) is an ideal contact and residual partner for post emergence graminicides coming out of winter.
- Applying a total of 2,000 g/ha pendimethalin from both pre and post emergence sprays provides the maximum amount of residual activity of any black-grass that is yet to germinate.
- Picolinafen provides useful contact activity that boosts the black-grass control from the partner graminicide.
- Pendimethalin and picolinafen are key components of annual meadowgrass and broad-leaved weed control.
