Laying the foundations for stable crops
Key messages:
- A dry start and forward crops creates significant risk of lodging
- Get the foundations right with a good PGR programme to safeguard yield
- Start discussing PGR options now rather than as a last resort
- Canopy is the reliable and flexible choice to reduce lodging risk, whatever the weather
The mild weather in December and early January has been good to winter cereals and across the country crops are looking forward, hopefully creating opportunities for strong yields this year. However, the dry start, with many crops drilled into dry seed beds, followed by wet weather may mean that roots have not had to travel far for moisture. This combination puts cereal crops at significant risk of lodging this year.
Due to these factors it is important to start considering your PGR options now, ather than an emergency measure later in the season. T0 is a key timing to start a programme to lay strong foundations to secure the crop’s potential.
Of course on this strange little Island the cool weather could be upon us any moment and stop growth in its tracks. However, even in a non ‘PGR year’ protecting your crop’s potential should still play an important part of the strategy.
