OSR flowering fungicides 2021
Disease control - azole-free - keeps leaves green
Sclerotinia Control
Against Sclerotinia, Filan® and Pictor® are still the standards to beat. They give peace of mind since we now tend to rely on a single spray to protect the whole flowering period. All Sclerotinia fungicides provide only protectant activity, they have no curative activity. AHDB fungicide performance 4 trial summary 2015-2017
Light Leaf Spot ‘top up’.
The flowering spray can provide a ‘top-up’ to the earlier LLS sprays but is too late to control established infections.
Filan® and Pictor® provide this ‘top-up’ and importantly is azole-free. LLS has decreased sensitivity to azoles, due to their repeated use in the crop.
FRAG UK advise using different modes of action to azoles at flowering in order to protect their activity.
AHDB fungicide performance 7 trial summary 2015-20. Fungicides were applied at the target LLS timing in autumn and spring. All provided a similar level of control - the typical 50%
Filan® and Pictor® keep leaves green for yield
Why is GLAD (Green Leaf Area Duration) important?
Filan® increases GLAD and yield where no visible disease ADAS 4 trial summary 2017,2018 ADAS has shown that Filan® and Pictor® keep leaves greener for longer during the seed-fill period to maximize yield. This has been quantified in the ADAS ‘GLAD’ trials. The maintenance of green leaf helps counteract events later in the summer such as dry conditions causing premature leaf loss or dull weather reducing photosynthesis. And it’s a benefit whether there is disease present or not.
The increase in GLAD and associated yield increase of 0.25t/ha has also been found with Pictor® which is not surprising – both fungicides contain boscalid, which reduces the stress hormone ethylene.
Recommendation
Filan® 0.3-0.5 kg/ha at early to mid-flower There is no evidence of resistance to SDHI fungicides to Sclerotinia in the UK but as precautionary resistance management, the Filan label advises a tank mix with a 2nd mode of action.
Or Pictor® 0.5l/ha at early to mid-flower. Use plant protection products safely. Always read the label and product information before use.
