Black-grass control
Pre-emergence options
- Crystal provides the best start to black-grass control pre-emergence.
- Trials demonstrate that Hurricane (diflufenican) is the best partner to Crystal, providing an additional 10-15% black-grass control.
Stacking residuals pre-emergence adds to the level of black-grass control that can be achieved.
Programme options
- Aim for a programme approach based on Crystal pre-emergence.
- If using Atlantis, the addition of Stomp Aqua or Picona or Auxiliary will improve the mean level of control and consistency of control. Aim to apply Atlantis in the autumn provided conditions allow.
- Since 2008, BASF trials have demonstrated that Avadex Excel pre-emergence followed by Crystal + Hurricane (DFF) at 1 leaf of the black-grass has given the highest and most consistent control of black-grass, and particularly in dry conditions which favour Avadex.
Trial conclusions
- Aim for 100% control in the autumn.
- Always use a pre-emergence herbicide based on flufenacet to optimise black-grass control. Across a range of trials, Crystal has given the highest and most consistent levels of control.
- Pre-emergence followed by early post-emergence programmes have the greatest effects.
- Avadex or Crystal used pre emergence will give greater flexibility for following programmes.
- Choose an effective mix partner for Atlantis; Picona, Auxiliary or Stomp Aqua.
