Pre-emergence herbicides are vital for peas & beans

Crop establishment is critical to the success of peas and beans and so attention to detail is key

  • Avoid compacted seedbed to allow maximum root growth
    - Peas/Beans can suffer from moisture stress more than cereals
    - Restricted root growth can reduce yield by up to 40%
  • Avoid cloddy seedbeds
    - Good seedbed improves establishment, pre-em efficacy and crop safety
  • Drill to suitable depth
    - Need good seed to soil contact for rapid germination
  • Apply pre-em herbicide within 48 hours of drilling
    - Legumes suffer badly from early weed competition
    - Nirvana®, Stomp® Aqua and other pre-ems must be applied
  • Post-em weed control options
    - Broad leaved weed herbicide options are limited to bentazone (e.g. Basagran® SG) - - Grass weed control can be achieved with Laser®

Nirvana® and Stomp® Aqua are the strongest pre-em herbicide options. They provide early control of a wide range of grass and broad-leaved weeds when applied pre-em of both the crop and weeds.

Pay attention to seedbed quality to get the best efficacy and crop safety

  • Good seedbeds and soil structure benefit both crop establishment and the performance of pre-emergence herbicides. Don’t use on water-logged soil or soils prone to waterlogging.
  • Fine, firm seedbeds improve seed to soil contact which improves germination and establishment
  • Clod free seedbeds also aid efficacy and safety of pre-emergence herbicides
  • Drill to a minimum depth of 25mm and ensure seed is fully covered with settled soil
  • Level and consolidate loose, cloddy or open tilth before spraying pre-emergence herbicides
  • Do not apply where the seedbed is stony, rough, cloddy or open, or when heavy rain is forecast
  • Ideally apply within 48 hours of drilling
  • Do not apply Nirvana® or Stomp® Aqua once the crop plumule is less than 13mm from the soil surface

Post crop-emergence broad leaved weed herbicide options are limited to bentazone

Basagran® SG (bentazone) is the post-em option for broad leaved weed control. Optimum activity and crop safety rely on application in the correct conditions; bright, warm days with small, actively growing weeds (see product label for advice on application timings and use of split rate applications).

All bentazone products (Basagran SG and others) are subject to the same water stewardship guidelines. Please refer to the bentazone Water Stewardship guidelines at www.agricentre.basf.co.uk/Water-Stewardship/Bentazone-Stewardship.html for BASF’s recommendations for responsible use of bentazone products.
