How to get the best weed control
1. Timings
Broad-leaved weeds: Target 1 - 4TL of actively growing weeds - don’t let them get bigger. The below weeds can get away quickly, so we recommend a maximum weed size for application:
- Crane’s-bill spp: 2 true leaves
- Runch: 3 true leaves
- Mayweed spp: 4 true leaves
- Poppy: 4 true leaves
Volunteer Cereals: Target 2-3TL of the cereals (latest is 2 tillers)
With high populations of charlock or runch, it is tempting to wait for all to emerge, but it is better to get the majority at the correct growth stage, both in terms of weed control & protecting yield. At the same time the other weeds are also getting bigger...
2. Application
- 100 litres is OK. Angled nozzles will help if it’s a thick crop; increasing volume will not.
- Medium spray is OK, using flat fan or small droplet air induction nozzles. Not coarse.
- Allow a minimum of 2 hours (if applied to a dry leaf) to become rain-fast.
- Always add Dash® HC 1.0l/ha – it improves leaf cover and uptake.
3. Recommendations
| Expected weeds | Recommendation |
|---|---|
| General BLW, including problem crucifers | Cleravo® 1.0l/ha + Dash® HC 1.0 l/ha OR Cleranda® 2.0l/ha + Dash® HC 1.0l/ha |
| High population of ‘early’ weeds – crane’s-bill, poppy, mayweed. | Either of above options followed by Astrokerb OR Metazachlor 1.0-1.5l/ha pre-em followed by Cleravo® 1.0l/ha + Dash® HC 1.0l/ha |
Remember to avoid mis-application of Cleranda® & Cleravo® to non-Clearfield® varieties. After application wash sprayer tank thoroughly, as per label.
Black-grass activity from Clearfield®?
Cleravo® and Cleranda® will give variable control of black-grass. They should be used in programmes with specific black-grass herbicides e.g. propyzamide, which will also provide good resistance management.
