BASF pre-emergence herbicides available

The advent of cabbage stem flea beetle has understandably led to questioning the risk of front-loading costs by using a pre-emergence herbicide, especially when there are new post-em options.

We know that dry autumn seedbeds conditions exacerbate CSFB damage. But where establishment conditions look promising there are still good reasons to consider a pre-em in the programme.

The pre-emergence herbicide will:

  • Prevent BLW’s getting big quick, especially in the early drilled crops. Arylex can’t be used before 1st September and the weeds need to be small. The pre-em gets the weed control out of the way early before the workload demands of cereal drilling, and any escapees can be easily tidied up in the late autumn.
  • Contribute to grassweed control, reducing the issue with sprays clashing with clethodim timing and also providing a different MOA for resistance management.
Worries are sometimes voiced on the pre-em slowing the crop down, but this only happens if seedbeds are poor or if there is heavy rain within 48 hours of the herbicide application; both of which can be avoided.
